Lifford 2:1 Shannon Town

Friday evening saw the crowds come out to support both teams in this league cup final at the county grounds in Doora.

The Lifford team dominated the first half and deserved to go in at half time 1 up with a goal from live wire Matty Davenport playing wide on the left of the front three, the pass from Fiachra Roche was sublime and Matty done the rest. Lifford were on top and should have got a second before half time, the back four for Lifford Josh Ryan, John Allan John Maher and Johnston Mununkum were on top and snuffed out any chance the Shannon men had near goals.

The second half started slow and the Shannon side started to take control of the game by playing the ball longer and quicker into the Lifford half. Shannon town leveled the game about 20 minutes into the second half after having created a few half chances before the goal came.

This spurred the Lifford lads back into action and the game ebbed and flowed , both sides made some changes to their teams to try and get the edge. Some good skill down the left by Matty created the chance for Paul Marytn to put the ball past the Shannon Town kepper to send the Lifford supporter,s wild. With just over 10 minutes to play the back four of Lifford shone again and stood up to any attack from the Shannon Lads. The final whistle went and the celebrations started.

Congratulations to the players and manager Adrian Walsh and the management team , and as as captain John Maher said it was the unity within the squad and the club which helped inspire the team. Well done to Josh Ryan who was named man of the match.A big thank you also to the parents who brought the young mascots to the game to walk out with the players and to the large crowd of supporters who came to watch the game.

Roll onto next Sunday for the Clare Cup Semi Final against Tulla Utd in the county grounds , kick off 11 am, so please come out and support the team.
